Understanding the Dental Implant Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
Dental implants have become the preferred method for replacing missing teeth, offering a permanent solution that functions and feels like a natural tooth. At Centrasota Dental, we believe in patient education, and our team is committed to guiding you through every stage of the dental implant procedure.
The Dental Implant Process: A Multi-Stage Journey
The placement of a dental implant is a meticulously planned and executed process that ensures the long-term success of your new tooth.
1. Clinical Evaluation and Treatment Planning
Before any surgical procedure, our team will conduct a thorough examination of your oral and physical health. We will take X-ray images of your teeth and jawbone to determine if you are a suitable candidate. This crucial first step allows us to create a detailed, customized treatment plan tailored to your specific dental needs.
2. Placing the Implant and Bone Grafting
In this surgical stage, our dentist will administer local anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable. An incision is made in the gum to expose the jawbone, where a hole is carefully drilled. The implant—a small, screw-shaped titanium post—is then gently screwed into position. This is the foundation of your new tooth.
In some cases, the jawbone may not be thick enough to support the implant. This requires a bone graft for dental implants. This procedure adds bone material to the area to create a stable foundation. A sinus lift may also be performed in the upper jaw to create space for the implant.
3. Osseointegration and Abutment Placement
After the implant is placed, it is left to heal for several months. During this time, a remarkable biological process called osseointegration occurs, where the bone fuses directly with the implant post. This process provides unparalleled stability. Once osseointegration is complete, we place an abutment—a connector that will hold the final restoration.
4. The Final Restoration
After the surgical site has fully healed, we will prepare a suitable prosthesis to attach to the implant. For a single missing tooth, we use a custom-made dental crown. If you are replacing multiple teeth, a partial denture or a bridge may be attached to the implants.
Same-Day Implants: An Expedited Option
In some cases, dentists can attach a temporary crown or denture to the implant on the same day it is surgically inserted. These are known as immediate loading implants. This option is only suitable for patients who meet a very strict eligibility criteria, as a stable, healthy jawbone is essential for success. We will determine if you are a candidate during your initial consultation.
